Olkkolanlahti

Jämsän sydän logoThe Olkkolanlahti observation tower is located on a sheltered shore on Olkkolanlahti bay. The tower offers beautiful views of Olkkolanlahti bay and the mouth of the Kurujoki River. Even Tiirinselänne Ridge can be partially seen from the tower. The area has become a top birdwatching destination in recent years. Olkkolanlahti is ideal for spotting birds particularly after the ice has melted, when waterfowl flock to Kurujoki River. Night-singers appear in the summer when the thick reed beds are fully grown. In the autumn, you can see resting waterfowl in the bay. Some of the rarities found in the area include the Red-crested pochard and Great reed warbler.

Driving directions:

From the Jyväskyläntie (Highway 9) and Lahdentie (Highway 24) roundabout drive toward Lahti for approx. 4 km. Turn left onto Sahatie and then immediately right onto a small road for approx. 200 m. Walk through the gate and then approx. 400 m past a hill until the road curves to the left. Turn right off the road here and follow the tractor path to the shore. You will pass through a timber clearing for a couple hundred metres before reaching the tower.
