Karisalmi Organic Farm
“Situated far from the highway at the end of its own drive is the Karisalmi family farm compound. The main farm area is surrounded by beautiful parkland, with one side fronting Lake Paijanne. The land here is low-lying and filled with conifers and deciduous trees.”
Founded in 1939, the Karisalmi Organic Farm is a family-owned plantation set near Lake Paijanne. The first owner of the farm, Pekka Niilonpoika, farmed the land here in 1539-1559, after which the farm changed hands at a steady pace. Tero and Terhi Karisalmi purchased the farm in 2013 and are its 17th owners.
Highland cattle graze naturally on the farm’s pastures and are primarily fed hay. The Highland cattle produce a tender, organic beef, which the Karisalmis sell directly to consumers. All of the farm’s produce can be ordered directly from the Karisalmi Organic Farm. The farm has a small shop, which is open whenever the Karisalmis are home. The farm’s product offering includes cheese, bleu cheese sausages, frankfurters, ground beef, boneless and boned shoulder, knuckle, silverside and topside roast, entrecote, sirloin, fillet and breast, flank steak, bavette, hanger steak, skirt steak, picanha, round steak, osso bucco, spareribs, innards, cheeks, tongue, tail, ribs, bones, Tri-Tip and tomahawk.
The Karisalmi Organic Farm has its own farm abbatoir, in which they make every effort to slaughter the animals as humanely as possible on their own terms. Animals are not shouted at, forced or distressed.
