Lokalahti, Kaipola

The Lokalahti observation tower at Kaipola is one of the region’s best spots for birdwatching all year round. The tower is located near the equalisation basins and wastewater treatment plant of the Kaipola paper mill. The Lokalahti observation tower is tucked into a muddy-bottomed bay on Lake Päijänne, surrounded by shrubland and reeds. Numerous rare species have been spotted here, making the tower an excellent location for seeing a wide range of bird species. Birds frequenting the area include waterfowl, night-singers and waders as well as birds that are migrating or resting. You might also spot the occasional winter visitor. Rarities seen in the area include the Ruddy shelduck, Great egret and Snowy owl. The Gadwall has also nested in the area in recent years. The observation tower in particular offers excellent views of bird life, but there are also other good places for birdwatching along the shore of Lokalahti.

Driving directions:

The Lokalahti tower can be reached by driving from the Highway 9 roundabout toward Lahti (Highway 24) for approx. 3 km. Then, turn left onto Olkkolantie (sign for Kaipola) and drive for approx. 2 km. Turn onto the small road to the right at the barn on the east end of the field clearing. The road ends approx. 100 m at a pump house. The observation tower can already be seen from here on the south side of the railway tracks. A well-maintained path leads to the tower.
